The first step in creating an old-money capsule wardrobe is to rid yourself of the idea that more is better. Instead, focus on buying selected pieces that steeps in luxury and longevity. This is where a capsule wardrobe truly shines. By choosing versatile, high-quality garments that fit well and can effortlessly transition through the seasons, you will always be elegantly dressed to impress.
Essential Items
THE COAT
I’ll start this winter capsule wardrobe with the coat. The masterpiece for the season and the most expensive ones.
You don’t have to invest in a lot of coats to achieve this style, but I will share many options for you to have the best vision of how it would look like a full capsule wardrobe in old-money style. After that, you can purchase whatever you feel is necessary for you now, and replace some of the old clothes.
Quick tips:
- Give yourself time. Even if you are sure you like this style and it’s the best choice for you, don’t put any pressure on achieving it as soon as you can. Check your wardrobe, and see what you can still use, get rid of the things that you definitely won’t wear (or the ones that you never wore last year), and make a list of what you necessary clothes for this season.
- Avoid overspending. Easy to say, hard to do. What I like to do, is limit myself to one expensive item per season. For example, I won’t buy more than one coat per season, one pair of shoes per season, and so on.
For a winter capsule wardrobe you will need firstly to focus on purchasing pieces made from high-quality, warm fabrics such as wool and cashmere. These materials provide warmth, comfort, and classic elegance.
Affordable wool coats:
Consider investing in a timeless trench coat in a neutral color like camel, black, white, navy I found this very affordable one from Amazon (Camel wool coat and Black wool coat) and Xiaolizi, reasonable quality. Check this blog for more wool coats from Xiaolizi (White feminine wool coat – use my discount coupon: modestandminimalist and you get 15% off)
This versatile piece can be worn over a variety of outfits and instantly adds a touch of sophistication. Pair it with a chunky cable-knit sweater in a neutral shade like ivory or gray. Opt for a longer length to create a more elegant and refined silhouette.
Combine the sweater with a pair of tailored wool trousers in a classic color such as charcoal or navy. Complete the look with a pair of leather loafers or brogues and a structured leather tote bag for a chic and sophisticated winter ensemble.

Banana Republic and Mango have some affordable wool coats that I love, along with other old-money-inspired clothes.
THE BLAZER
Velvet blazer and plaid blazer are a must for an old-money aesthetic, but you have to be careful when you style it. It can be tricky, look at the style down below for inspiration:
THE SWEATER
A wealthy woman would never sacrifice her comfort just to follow a transient fashion trend. That’s one of the things that I love the most about this style: the comfort.
Winter is the perfect time to experiment with layering, allowing you to showcase your style while staying cozy.
When it comes to sweaters, the key is versatility. There are no limits to the number of ways you can wear them and you have many styles to choose from:
- fitted turtleneck;quarter
- V-neck sweater;
- cashmere sweater;
- cable knit sweater;
- stripe sweater;
- mock neck sweater;
- quarter zip sweater;
all in a neutral shade such as black, gray, or cream and quality fabrics like wool or cashmere.
These pieces will serve as the building blocks for your capsule wardrobe and provide endless possibilities for layering.
VESTS

BOTTOMS
Consider investing in a pair of well-fitted trousers or high-quality jeans. These versatile pieces can be easily paired with your winter essentials, offering a refined and polished aesthetic.

Adding a pair of stylish loafers or classic pumps can also provide versatility for more formal occasions.
ACCESSORIES
Accessories are the finishing touches that truly elevate an old-money winter ensemble. Invest in a high-quality leather handbag or tote that complements your overall style. Classic designs in neutral colors will not only withstand changing trends but also exude an air of sophistication.
