What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe refers to a compact and efficient collection of clothes that can be mixed and matched to create numerous outfits. It’s the answer to overwhelming andorn clothespiles of new trends. It’s about simplicity, versatility, and convenience.

Now that we’ve defined what it means, let’s take a step deeper into helping you curate a capsule wardrobe for winter that taps into the timeless old money style, without breaking your bank.

What is old money style?

If you’re wondering what the old money style is, where it originated, and why it’s significant, rest assured that I’ve covered it in a previous article. For more in-depth information, you can read my blog post titled:

How to master old-money aesthetic – Men’s edition

Now let’s dive into our current article and learn how to create an old money winter capsule wardrobe for men.

Choosing Winter Pieces for old money style

First up, you need to identify your staple pieces. For the winter, this typically includes coats, sweaters, chinos, and boots, along with essential accessories like scarves, gloves, and hats.

The aim of the old money style is not to choose fleeting trends but to invest in high-quality items that will stand the test of time. So choose a quality fabric like wool and cashmere. Think classic, timeless, and versatile pieces that provide warmth and durability.

The Perfect Jacket:

When it comes to epitomizing the old money style in the winter months, the perfect jacket is an indispensable item.

Now, this doesn’t mean any jacket, there are particular styles that better evoke this specific aesthetic.  Let’s take a closer look.

  • Wool Overcoat: A tailored wool overcoat lends a polished, timeless look to any outfit. Not only does it keep you warm during chilly days, but it’s simplistic and refined style makes it a perfect piece for achieving an old money aesthetic. Choose classic, muted colors like navy, black, camel or charcoal for added versatility.
  • Tweed Jacket: Harking back to the traditional British countryside attire, a tweed jacket exudes understated elegance. It offers an informal yet polished appearance, perfect for casual gatherings or weekend outings. So, with this style, you get the warmth, style, and timelessness all packed in one.
  • Double-Breasted Peacoat: There’s something immensely sophisticated about a double-breasted peacoat. This coat is having military roots and give it a masculine appeal, while its stylistic components like wide lapels and double-breasted closure gives it an old-world charm. To keep things classic, opt for navy or black.

I know that these jackets might look expensive, but they don’t necessarily have to burn a hole in your pocket. You can buy second-hand, choose affordable brands that value quality, and watch out for sales are all great strategies to build your winter wardrobe without splurging.

So, regardless of your budget, you can curate a winter capsule wardrobe that projects an old money aesthetic.

An Indispensable Sweater

If you’re looking to create an affordable old money winter capsule wardrobe, a high-quality sweater is an indispensable item. Not only is it comfortable and practical, but it’s also a versatile piece that can make a statement. By investing in timeless pieces like this, you can create a wardrobe that will last for years to come.

Winter calls for comfort, and what screams comfort more than pulling on a good quality sweater? From the wise words of the style icon Karl Lagerfeld,

“Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought some sweatpants.”

Karl Lagerfeld

And, no old money look will be complete without the use of this quintessential piece.

Select a few high-quality sweaters that are versatile enough to match with various other elements of your capsule wardrobe. It’s best to opt for neutral colors like navy, brown, grey, or beige – these can be easily paired with different trousers, button-down shirts under and shoes to create numerous stylish outfits. Don’t forget about the fabric. A cashmere sweater is not only stylish, but also cozy and elegant.

Opting for sweaters made from luxurious yet affordable fabrics like merino wool or cashmere blends will provide added comfort and durability while exuding timeless elegance. These types of materials have the two-fold benefit of being warm and lending a polished, sophisticated look to your ensemble.

If you’re on a tight budget, a cotton-cashmere blend will give you the luxurious feel without threatening your wallet. But I personally prefer either invest in a few quality sweaters, either check small brands for affordable high-quality fabric sweaters.

As for sweater styles, a fitting crew neck or v-neck is a timeless option. Both these styles impart a classic look that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Furthermore, they are ideal for layering – another key element in the old money aesthetic.

Cable knit sweaters are also an option, for a more relaxed yet still high-end look. A well-fitted ivory cable knit sweater (affordable from Amazon, but not the best fabric quality), a white button shirt under for layering, paired with dark tailored trousers and classic brown oxford shoes, accessories with a brown leather watch and brown leather belt, can be a perfect ensemble for a relaxed winter’s day brunch. Don’t forget about your coat, make sure you invest in a good quality item, I suggest this cashmere blend coat.

Note 1: This outfit is created with Amazon brands for you to find it easiest to find all the things you need for your wardrobe in a single place.

Note 2: If you love big brands, but you are on a budget, I also recommend buying from boutique stores that sell brand items at half a price or a good price. The only thing with this type of store it’s that you don’t always find what you need or your size, so you have to check them periodically to find what you need, but the range price for them it’s worth it.

The Essential Chinos:

Chinos are a versatile and classic addition to any old money style capsule wardrobe. Available in a range of shades, chinos could be chosen in earthy and neutral hues like khaki, navy, or grey. The triumvirate of old money elegance, these colors are aesthetically pleasing and compatible with various clothing items in your collection.

  • Comfortable and Practical: Chinos are incredibly comfortable, making them a suitable wear for both formal and casual settings. Created typically from cotton or a cotton-blend, they provide warmth during colder months. Did we mention pockets? Yes, they’ve got those too.
  • Versatility: When it comes to pairing your outfits, chinos are your best friend. They can be dressed up with a well-tailored jacket or a cashmere sweater for a refined, sophisticated look. On more relaxed days, team them with a casual flannel shirt or a simple polo t-shirt, the perfect getup for a laid-back but stylish demeanour.
  • Affordability: Although some high-end brands might be pricey, there are a plethora of options available for men who are budget-conscious. Look for sales or discounted pieces from trustworthy brands, or visit outlet stores to find quality chinos that won’t break the bank.

The goal here is to select chinos that offer a perfect balance of quality, style, and affordability. This ensures that they’ll not only last a few winters but will also be versatile enough to coordinate with the rest of your capsule wardrobe.

Winter Boots

Let’s turn our attention to the foundation of your wintertime ensemble – your footwear. One can’t ignore the significance of premium, stylish boots that ooze old money sophistication while offering much-needed protection and warmth in the winter.

First and foremost, you’ll want to invest in leather boots. There’s something innately refined about a well-made pair of leather boots. They’re not just practical, they also inject a rich dose of class into any attire. Select a pair in classic shades like black or brown for maximum versatility. Remember, the goal is to buy quality pieces that will last you for years. Also, ensure they’re waterproof – an essential feature for winter footwear.

Another great option for an old money vibe are chukka boots. These ankle-height boots with suede or leather uppers embody versatility and style. Perfect for a casual day out or a semi-formal event, chukkas can work well with a range of outfits from your capsule wardrobe. Pair them with dark jeans and your trusty jacket for a polished, laid-back look.

A quintessential element of a gentleman’s wardrobe you won’t want to miss are classic brogue boots. With their signature perforations and sturdy build, they add an edgy yet sophisticated dynamic to your ensemble.

It’s essential to remember that brogues come in various styles from half brogues, wingtips, to the full brogues. Choose what suits your style and comfort. Tool Tip:

“While selecting boots, remember to opt for ones that provide necessary traction and comfort. Dignified style shouldn’t require sacrificing practicality and safety.”

Lastly, but very important make sure to maintain your winter boots regularly. Be mindful of the fact that clean, polished boots equally represent good taste, respect for one’s belongings, and a preference for quality over quantity – all hallmarks of the stylish, old money ethos! Details matters!

Adding some extras

While the staples form the backbone of your capsule wardrobe, you can spice things up with some extras. These are items that offer a twist to your look, adding your personal touch while enhancing the overall outfit.

  • Scarves and Accessories. Your winter capsule wardrobe isn’t complete without accessories. A wool or cashmere scarf in a solid color or simple pattern ties together your old money look while providing practical warmth. If scarves aren’t your thing, consider an ascot or a cravat. These are quintessential old money accessories that will elevate any outerwear.
  • Other essential accessories include leather gloves, a tasteful watch, a quality leather wallet, timeless pairofsunglasses or classic hat like a flat cap or a fedora. All are functional and stylish additions that can add a layer of sophistication to your winter outfits.

In the end, keep in mind that old money style doesn’t necessarily mean expensive. It’s about quality, simplicity, and timelessness. So, choose classic pieces that will last, both in style and durability. Happy shopping!

Embracing Affordable Old Money Style

Creating a sophisticated old money style capsule wardrobe for wintertime doesn’t have to break the bank. The essence of old money fashion is about selecting pieces that signify timelessness, quality, and tasteful discretion. Therefore, smart, value-focused shopping is key.

Old money aesthetic it’s not about having an endless array of clothes, but about honing in on select pieces that can be styled together in various ways. This approach, while saving you money in the long run, also gives your style a distinct personality—a reflection of timeless elegance that the old money aesthetic represents.

Tips:

  • Research Thoroughly: Before making purchases, spend ample time researching to find the best deals and discounts. Look for sales or outlet stores that offer quality merchandise at lower prices. Shop in the off-season and invest in pre-loved or thrifted high-quality items. The goal is to buy less, buy better, and make it last.
  • Identify Essential Items: Consider what items you wear most often during the winter season. These could be a warm overcoat, a pair of sturdy boots, or a comfortable pullover.
  • Invest In Quality: While quality pieces may seem expensive initially, they often offer more value over time due to their durability and timeless style.
  • Be Patient: Don’t feel the need to complete your winter capsule wardrobe all at once. Taking your time allows you to make well-considered purchases. What I like to do to prevent overspending or buying clothes on impulse, is to limit myself to one single big item per season. For example, I will invest only in one coat per winter, one jacket in the fall/spring season, and one pair of shoes per season.
